There are 17,508 islands in Indonesia. Only 6,000 are inhabited. The major islands are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes), and Papua.
Indonesia is the 4th most populous country in the world. There are about 237 million people living in Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago.
Indonesia used to be known as the Dutch East Indies, because it was colonized by the Dutch for almost 350 years.
